6. 1 58 Jan. 20, 1988 Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Williams, Retired News City Editor By JIM NICHOLSON Daily News Staff Writer Robert C. "Will" Williams, a retired night city editor of the Daily News who never missed a deadline or forgot a friendship, died yesterday. He was 66 and lived in Downingtown.

Will Williams retired in 1984, after 17 years with the newspaper, most of that time as the midnight to 8 a.m. city editor. His shift was the last stop before the paper's first edition hit the streets, and it was Will who relied on his experience and gut instinct to decide to what crime scene and which fire to dispatch his limited staff of reporters and photographers. "Very seldom was he off base on Williams said Elwood P. Smith, a Daily News photographer.

"He was a man who was able to say right away whether we should cover a story. We trusted each other. That's a big part of any business. Will rates up on the top." While some editors would listen to a police call on the radio, Will would take its pulse. If he detected a quaver in the dispatcher's tone he would.

take a deep drag off a Camel cigarette and in a gravel voice order a photographer or reporter to "get up there and see what's going on." Mike Freeman, Daily News city editor recalled, "Will could be real gruff at You'd ask him a question and he'd either yell at you or mumble, 'I don't f- ing Sometimes he'd go for days like that, and then you'd walk in and he'd say something like, 'You know what, Freeman? You got the world by the a And he'd chuckle and push his glasses up on the bridge of his nore. At that point you knew Will had stopped being gruff for a while." The tough, hard-drinking, two-fisted city editor image was no facade. Its roots were in the reality of almost eight years on a submarine from just before World War II until 1948. When the Navy cut back its submarine service and said he'd have to go on a surface ship, Will mustered out as radioman 2nd class. Freeman described Williams as See DEATHS Next Page Death Notices ADKINS ANNA LEE SMITH, age 85, Jan.
