Robert H. Deruy

Robert H. Deruy, age 81, of Shelby, died Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Med Central Mansfield Hospital.

He was born May 18, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan and was a graduate of North Fairfield Ohio High School. As a young man he worked at the former Wilkins Air Force Depot in Shelby where he met the love of his life, Dorothy Auck. They were married on November 21, 1953 and on February 19, 2012 she preceded him in death.

Bob retired from the Shelby Post Office after many years of service. He and his wife, Dorothy, spent 18 of their retirement winters in Myrtle Beach where they had many friends that became their second family. Bob was a lifelong Detroit Tiger fan and enjoyed watching any and all sports on TV. His greatest joys were times spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his sons: Robert C. (Viki) Deruy of Shelby and Michael E. (Paula) Deruy of Powell; his grandchildren: Cari (John) Gauld of Brewer, Maine, Keli (Norman) Eckel of Perrysburg, Courtney Deruy, Mitchell Deruy and Alexis Deruy all of Powell; a great grandson: Hunter Gauld; a sister: Bertha (Leroy) Seigfreid of Willard; his aunt: Jean Straley of Greenwich.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents: Dovie (Angel) and Emile Deruy.

Edna P. (Hohler) Herlihy

Edna P. (Hohler) Herlihy, age 90, of Shelby, died early Friday morning, October 11, 2013 at Med Central Shelby Hospital.

She was born January 26, 1923 in Monroeville, OH the daughter of the late Henry and Mary (Heether) Hohler. Edna was a graduate of Birmingham (OH) High School and The Mansfield Business College. On May 6, 1944 she married James F. Herlihy and after 68 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on July 25, 2012.

In addition to an extended period as a full time mother and homemaker, Edna worked as a secretary at the Atomic Bomb Project in Oak Ridge, TN, The Ohio Steel Tube Company, and the library at Shelby Senior High School, retiring in 1985. She was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society.

Edna is survived by her children: Carol (Steven) Moore of Mundelein; IL, Mary Jo McHugh of Shelby; Robert (Shelley) Herlihy of Cincinnati, OH; Thomas (Margo) Herlihy of Dublin, OH; and Richard Herlihy (Betty Herndon) of Linn, MO; 11 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren (soon to be 10); 7 step grandchildren; 12 step great grandchildren; 1 step great great grandson; 2 sisters: Dorothy Seiler of Sandusky, OH and Virginia (Charlie) Young of Shelby; Sisters-in-law: Marie Hohler and Anne (Emile) John; Brothers-in-law: William (Joanne) Herlihy and Dennis Herlihy. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 3 brothers: Lawrence, Clifford, Dennis (Dan) Hohler; 2 sisters: Agnes Link and Elizabeth Hohler; her beloved son-in-law: Dr. John McHugh.

Family and friends are welcome on Thursday, October 17, 2013 from 5-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby and also from 9:30- 10:15 AM on Friday at the funeral home. The rosary will be recited at 7:45 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 AM at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 29 West Street, Shelby with Father James Sanford officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Memorial expressions may be made to St. Mary School Endowment Fund.

John N. Metzger

John N. Metzger, age 80, lifelong Shelby Settlement resident, died Saturday, October 12, 2013 at his home.

He was born February 28, 1933 in Shelby the son of the late Clement and Mae (Sutter) Metzger. John graduated in 1951 from Campion High School in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Army 2nd Amphibious Support Brigade. John was a member of the Shelby American Legion. In 1998, he retired from ArcelorMittal in Shelby after 33 years of service. Farming was also an important part of John’s life and even after his retirement he enjoyed helping at Niese Farms. John was an active member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Bethlehem, where he took great pride in maintaining and caring for the parish grounds and any necessary maintenance. He was an usher, lector, Eucharistic minister and had been a member of the parish council numerous times.

John was a hard worker and enjoyed gardening and anything outdoors. An avid planter of trees, he planted hundreds of trees around the longtime family homestead. John was a talented individual who could build, fabricate, invent or fix anything, probably missing his calling as a mechanical engineer.

John was a wonderful husband, dad, and grandfather deeply loved and admired by his family. A pillar of strength for his family and a man who portrayed family values by his example. He will be deeply missed and forever in their hearts.

He is survived by his wife: Alice (Biglin) Metzger, whom he wed on August 27, 1955; his children: Steve (Kim) Metzger of Crestline; Julie (Roger) Finnegan of Tiro; Edward (Andrea) Metzger of Slidell, LA; Sheila (Steve) Vogt of Crestline, Vince (Amy) Metzger of Mason, Mitchell (Lynn) Metzger of Ashland; 22 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Joe (Lynne) Metzger of Marion and Jim (Janice) Metzger of Chardon; 4 sisters: Lucy (Mark) Rietschlin of Shelby; Sr. Celine (Agnes) Metzger, HM of Villa Maria, PA; Rosemary (Carl) Keller of Shelby; Loretta Paskert of Brooklyn, OH; 2 sisters-in-law: Louann Metzger of Shelby and Pat Metzger of California. He was preceded in death by 6 siblings: Hubert Metzger, Carl Metzger, Leo Metzger, Fr. Clement Metzger, Nellie Young, and an infant brother, Carl Joseph Metzger.

Family and friends are welcome on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where the rosary will be recited at 7:45 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Bethlehem Shelby Settlement with Father Michael Geiger officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Sacred Heart Church Maintenance Fund.

Mary M. Mollett

Mary M. Mollett, age 81, of Shelby, died late Thursday evening, October 3, 2013 at her home.

Mary was born January 28, 1932 in Van Lear, KY, the daughter of the late George and Murtie (Pugh) Varner. She had retired from MTD in Willard in 1990 after 23 years of service and then went on to work at Meijer’s in Ontario for nine years. When Mary was still working at MTD, she liked to bowl and was on a bowling league. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards and used to enjoy crocheting and quilting. She also loved tending to her outside flowers and landscaping. Mary found joy going out to eat with any of her kids which was often followed by a shopping trip, as she was an avid shopper.

Mary is survived by:2 sons: Gary Mollett of Shelby, Jason Mollett of Mansfield; 6 daughters: Debra Henderson of Shelby, Evelyn Kubitz (Mike Stockmaster, Sr.) of Mansfield, Pamela (Jeff) Steele of Shelby, Devone (Richard) Gable of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Tamara (Anthony) Smith of Shelby, Michelle Evans (Trevor Leemaster) of Marysville; 22 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-law: Mary Varner of CA, Anna Ward of Shelby, Gladys Mollette of KY; and her special four-legged friend Little Bit. She was preceded in death by: her husband: Frank D. Mollett in 1990; a son: James Howard Varner; a daughter: Carol Wertz; infant daughter: Nicole Mollett; 3 brothers: Joseph Varner, George Varner, William Varner; a sister: Rosybell Tallon.

Steven H. Schroeder

Steven H. Schroeder, age 61, of Shelby, died Sunday, September 29, 2013.

He was born February 25, 1952 in Lima, Ohio and was a 1970 graduate of Shelby Senior High School. Steve was first and foremost a farmer his entire life. He was currently the road superintendent for Sharon Township and previously sold Kent Feed and Pioneer Seed. Steve was very active in helping and supporting his wife, Brenda, in their business, Schroeder’s Dairy Delight, transporting their ice cream trailers to various fairs and festivals around Ohio. Steve was a meticulous woodworker, including having restored their family farm house. He truly enjoyed 4-wheeling in southern Ohio with his sons. Even with his struggles with his health and pain issues, nothing made Steve happier than spending time with his granddaughter, Addison. She always brought joy to his life and put a smile on his face.

Steve is survived by his wife: Brenda S. (Pore) Schroeder, whom he wed on October 7, 1978; 3 sons: Matthew Schroeder of Shelby, Mark Schroeder of Shelby, Jeremy (Abby) Schroeder of Willard; his granddaughter: Addison Schroeder; his father: Virgil T. Schroeder of Shelby; his siblings: Dianne (Thom) Powers of Oregon, OH, Nancy (James) Schell of TX, Donald Schroeder (Deb Parks) of Shelby, Jean Ann (Keith) Fairchild of Shelby, Ursula (Ken) Esterline of Shelby, Lisa (Abel) Hernandez of Beavercreek, OH, Barbara Schroeder of MD, and Julie (Mark) Friebel of Shelby; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Marjorie Pore, Glen (Marilyn) Pore, Dale Pore, Dean (Barbara) Pore, Bob (Connie) Pore; Numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother: Joan May (Kiene) Schroeder; a son: Michael Schroeder; a brother: Richard Schroeder; 2 sister-in-law: Jeannette Schroeder and Phyllis Pore and a brother-in-law: John Pore.

Funeral services celebrating Steve’s life will be held on Friday at 11 AM at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Edna Stahl and Rev. James Humphrey officiating. Rita M. Cline

Rita M. Cline, age 92, of Shelby, died Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Hospice House of North Central Ohio in Ashland.

Rita was born March 23, 1921 in Fremont, Ohio, the daughter of the late Anthony and Josephine (Labardee) Foos. She was a 1939 graduate of Shelby High School and was a former employee of Shelby Business Forms. She was an avid card player and enjoyed quilting. Rita was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

A loving mother and grandmother, Rita is survived by: 4 daughters: Barbara Doskocil of Westlake, Caroline (Mike) Burling of Yulee, FL, Mary (Gene) Mitchell of Butler, Jennifer (Tom) Brown of Westerville; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; a sister: Theresa Leonhardt of NY. She was preceded in death by: her husband: Ralph E. Cline on September 1, 1994; a son, James Cline; 5 brother; 8 sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby. Fr. Rod Kreidler will celebrate and burial will follow in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the church or to Hospice of North Central Ohio.

Howard Dean Von Stein

Howard Dean Von Stein, age 82, of Tiro, died Thursday, September 19, 2013 at The Willows at Willard.

He was born June 25, 1931 in Orange Township, Hanco*ck County, Ohio the son of the late Albert Edward and Estella Adella (Wilch) Von Stein. Howard was a graduate of Sycamore High School and a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Coast Guard. A farmer his entire life, Howard’s live revolved around farming, family and church. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Shelby where he served on the church council and sang in the choir. He served on the Board of Directors of Country Star, was a member of the Buckeye Central School Board , American Soybean Association Committee, Farm Bureau, New Washington Legion, Galion Moose Lodge and sold real estate for Fred Barr Realty in Galion.

Howard is survived by his children: Ron (Ruth) Von Stein of Shelby, Edward Von Stein of Tiro, Eric (Jodie) Von Stein of New Washington, Patricia (Geoff) Holland of West Palm Beach, FL;

His grandchildren: Toby, Roy, Ceceia, Dawson, Abbie, and Emily Von Stein, Grace and Claire Holland; a sister: Ruth (Frank) McClain of Sycamore; 2 Sister-in-laws: Gladys Von Stein of Nevada and Joyce Von Stein of Shiloh; 2 brother-in-laws: John Freed of Jenera and LaVerne Freed of Forest. He was preceded in death by his wife: Emma Marie Von Stein in 2009; a son: Gregory Von Stein; and brothers: Raymond and Gerald Von Stein.

Viewing will be on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 10-11 AM at First Lutheran Church, 33 Broadway, Shelby where funeral services will be held at 11 AM with Pastor Russel Yoak officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby with military honors conducted by Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. The family will greet guests at the luncheon following the services at the graveside. Memorial expressions may be made to First Lutheran Church.

Paul R.”Dick” “Hosey” Jose

Paul R.”Dick” “Hosey” Jose, age 81, of Shelby, died Tuesday evening, September 17, 2013 at his home after a short illness.

He was born January 13, 1932 in Waverly, Ohio the son of the late Chester and Pauline (Bucy) Jose. He was a 1951 graduate of Waverly High School and was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Junior Order and Woody Ridge Golf Course. He enjoyed all sports and fishing with his buddy Pete.

Paul is survived by his wife Betty Miller Humphrey Jose, whom he wed on June 20, 1964; a son: Craig (Sarah) Jose of Ontario; a daughter: Paula (Joe) Wheeler of Mansfield; 2 step daughters: Pamela (Roger) Crager of Rome and Kathy (Frank) Long of Mt. Gilead; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 5 step great grandchildren; 2 brother: Marvin (Sandy) Jose of Myrtle Beach and Edward (Mildred) Jose of Brooksville, FL; 2 step sister: Maxine (Ronnie) Detillion of Shelby and Lu Ella (Clarence) Canter of Portsmouth; a brother-in-law: Robert (Ella) Campbell of Lake Wales, FL; 2 sister-in-laws: Audrey Campbell Tarolli of Owosso, MI and Edith (Eugene) Bushey of Mt. Cristine Lucille Adkinson

Cristine Lucille Adkinson, age 47, of Shelby went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Med Central Shelby Hospital after a courageous battle.

She was born October 12, 1965 in Fort Benning, Georgia. She was a 1984 graduate of Plymouth High School and received her master’s degree in education from Ashland University. Cris was an intervention specialist for Shelby City Schools where she loved teaching her students. She was an active member of Shelby First Church of God and enjoyed fellowship with many other congregations. Cris was a devout follower of Jesus Christ having unbreakable faith which kept her fighting each day. With her walk with Christ, she was truly healed and at peace.

She enjoyed reading, supporting her children in their numerous activities and caring for her beloved dog, Queenie. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her husband and children.

Cris is survived by her husband: Braden T. Adkinson whom she wed on March 12, 1994; 2 daughters: Cara Hall of St. Clairsville, OH and Emily Adkinson a student at Ursuline College; a son: Kendall Adkinson a freshman at Shelby High School; her parents: Barbara and Bill Bland of Shelby; 2 siblings: Kathy (Mike) Gardner of Willard and Jimmy Elliott of Shelby; her father-in-law: Waldon (Ina) Adkinson of Kentucky; Braden’s 7 brothers and sisters and their spouses; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law: Sue Adkinson.

Funeral services, giving glory to God for Cris’ life, will be on Saturday at 10:30 AM at the First Church of God, 3616 State Route 39, Shelby with Pastor Dan Rebon and Pastor George Johnson officiating. Loren Edward Hipsher

Loren Edward Hipsher, of rural Crestline, died Monday, September 16, 2013 as a result of a tractor accident on the family farm. He was 64.

Known to family and friends as “Hippie”, “Charlie” or “Eddie”, he was born December 4, 1948 in Shelby to Loren Fried and Martha I. (Sonnanstine) Hipsher. After graduating from Buckeye Central High School in 1966, he then became a Paratrooper in the US Army, serving during the Vietnam Era in Panama. Charlie worked his entire career at ArcelorMittal in Shelby where he retired after 45 years of service. Charlie was a master at puttering and tinkering being able to fix anything. He took great pride in the maintenance of his home, lawn, landscaping, and the family homestead.

On September 28, 1973 he married Rose M. (Hanovich) and she survives. Also surviving are: his mother: Martha I. Hipsher of Crestline; 7 siblings: Peggy (Richard) Armstrong of Worthington, Donna (Charles) Dean of Crestline, Edna Albright of Plymouth, Mary (James) Koeper of Hollywood, SC, Debra (Ronald) Lutz of Tiffin, Annette (Bradley) Richards of New Washington, Timothy (Robin) Hipsher of Crestline; brother in law: Duane Bosley; many nieces, nephews, and friends; and his ever faithful canine companion, Rambo. He was preceded in death by: his father: Loren F. Hipsher in 2008; mother and father in law: Margaret and Stephen Hanovich; sister in law: Barbara Bosley; brother in law: William Albright.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Pastor Jay Scott, Pastor of Tiro United Methodist Church, will officiate and burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Shelby. Military honors will be conducted by the Richland County Joint Veteran Burial Detail. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorial contributions can be made to Tiro-Auburn Volunteer Fire Department or Crawford County Humane Society.
