Thanks for this... there seemed to be 20 posts about finals week.

CONGRATULATIONS Cadets!

J Doerr Aug '11

Victory run broadcast link? anyone have it?

Justin Altrogge Aug '11

Go cadets!

John Davis Aug '11

Congrats to all corps! And an even more congrats to the Cadets! They deserved a win this year! :) Craziest year in a long while, don't you think?

Justin Altrogge Aug '11

oh yes but the best year in a while :D im sad it's over

Astrognash Aug '11

Congratulations, Cadets! They really deserved this win!

biscotti Aug '11

Now for Football season! Too bad my team sucks :( Is it 2012 yet?

I'm gonna miss this year

Dan Balash Aug '11

question: how is the visual trophy decided? I know it's averaged over all 3 days, but is it visual ensemble+visual performance+color guard/3, or is it just visual ensemble+visual performance? If it's the first way, the trophy went to the wrong group; if it's the 2nd, The Cadets won by 0.0666667.

Frick Nits Aug '11

Best Year Ever. Period.

FreakoftheArts73 Aug '11

^ Agreed. 17th place might have made finals had that show been performed a different season.

J Doerr Aug '11

I think it goes to the person who won that night Dan.

Bryan LaHaise Aug '11

Congradulation's to all who competed in the DCI World Championship, from what I saw at AMC, YOU are ALL winner's.

Dan Balash Aug '11

All captions I believe are averaged throughout the 3 days. I'm just not positive if color guard is included in the visual total score or not.

Also, fun facts of the day:

Carolina Crown now has more Top 5 finishes in the past TWENTY YEARS than the Madison Scouts. (Crown: 4, Madison, 3)

Carolina Crown's 19.5 is the lowest High Brass score at Finals (proportional to the maximum) since the 1995 Blue Devils.

Kever Lewis Aug '11

I saw an MML shirt as I was walking through the DCI marketplace. It was kind of cool. I also met a ton of other MMLers that marched

Adrian Caswell captainAug '11

@Dan - The outstanding visual award is for the visual performance caption. It is averaged over the three nights.

Aaron Hudson Aug '11

Kever, that was probably me... XD

Frick Nits Aug '11

Just watched the Cadets finals performance on the FN.

One word: Un-believe-able.

Brendon Aug '11

Just got back to the hotel and I've gotta say...all those groups were incredible. Everyone in finals should be seriously proud of themselves. Extra congrats to The Cadets! They were pretty amazing tonight :D

And I saw the person (Aaron?) wearing the MML shirt around the market plaza also; didn't say anything though, haha.

LKendrick captainAug '11

Best. Year. Ever.

Best Blue Knights show ever? I think so. :)

Who else is FREAKING depressed it's over? Most intense season to follow.

Frick Nits Aug '11

^ I only followed the last 2 weeks (I saved all excitement for Allentown) and I'm sad its over.

Quaid Swiger Aug '11

This was an amazing season to follow, from beginning to end. I have nothing to look forward to except when I try out for Jersey Surf the end of this year for the 2012 season. I'm really excited after everything that has happened this year. All I can do is watch the videos from the performances and relive the shows over and over.

bluesky94 Aug '11

who got Fan Favorite?

UnashamedHope Aug '11

Everyone did.

Actually, I don't think they did that this year. That might be because there were just too many good shows this year :)

Anthony Wolcott Aug '11

Go cadets!

Mr McMusic captainAug '11

@ Landry: I agree with you 100%. I've been following this activity longer than most of you have been alive and, in my opinion, this was the BEST SEASON EVER!

Every show in the top 6 could have easily won the championship in any other year. They were just that strong.

I also agree with your assessment of Blue Knights. I remember, back in the day, before they went all "dark" and this season reminds me of that. Their "dark" shows were really good, but not always "fan friendly". This year was amazing for Blue Knights. Based on an interview with their director, Mark Arnold, I expect they will continue on this path.

So, is it June 2012 yet?

bingo Aug '11

I went to finals last night and it was my second time being at a competition (I went to dci St. Louis earlier this year) and it was AMAZING! There wasn't a show that I didn't enjoy and it was just amazing.

-The Cadets were definitely my favorite performance of the night, their show was just unbelievabley cool, *SO* much GE! The crowd around me was going crazy from the beginning.
-Blue Devils' show was extremely well performed and had some cool music, they sounded really good too!
-I wasn't a fan of the Cavaliers' show earlier this year, but after last night it was my second favorite next to Cadets! I really didn't understand the show but it was cool none the less. The crowd really went wild for them too.
-Carolina Crown's show was really fun, and I loved hearing Bohemian Rhapsody. They were rachin', and very loud!
-Phantom Regiment's "Juliet" was simply amazing. I loved their opener, and I especially loved the closer. Their music is beautiful and they sound great. I loved the DM's death... possibly my favorite moment of the night.

So... Long story short, all of these shows were first in my mind :)
Finals night was definitely a highlight of my summer and I can't wait until next year! Apparently I couldn't have picked a better year to start following DCI.

LKendrick captainAug '11

How about is it November yet?! I want to go dominate that Blue Knights audition. :D

Fieldtitan Aug '11

Since 2009, I always thought there was something missing about the shows. Yes, they were still fantastic, but this year was just amazing. Great music, great GE, great emotion.

Anyone else think that 2011 will live on for generations to come?

midwamericanarts Aug '11

@Fieldtitan

Definitely. I took some friends from high school to see this for their first time, and they absolutely loved it. They were in love from the beginning, to the point where the people around them had to shush them (sorry!). I don't think this year had the show that was executed to the max, like in 2006 Cavis, or 2010 Blue Devils. But this year had shows that the fans fell in love with. Everyone talks about 08's Spartacus and Samurai as some of the coolest shows. This year, I feel like we had Angels vs. Demons, XtraordinarY, Rach Star, and Juliet (personal favorites). I won't forget this year at all!

However, I've never been a fan of the Blue Devils before, anyone can tell you that. But first, I'd like to just say how wrong I was about them. While I'm still not a fan, they seemed like the most talented group there to me. Their show wasn't what it needed to be though, like in past years. Instead, they sacrificed a little of their usual design. Michael Cesario asked corps to have shows this year that were more fan friendly. Kudos to all the groups for taking that on, and most of all the Blue Devils. And thank you Michael Cesario for an amazing night, as well as all the corps!

Fieldtitan Aug '11

You're right, the Blue Devils definitely had the most talent out of all of the corps. But you need more than talent for victory, the Cadets proved that last night.

Frick Nits Aug '11

If dci was only a matter of talent it would be on NBC and have a lot of unnecessary fluff. Its a matter of good visual design, good music, and good performance. This year, every top 12 corps had those things.

FreakoftheArts73 Aug '11

^ the good visual design and good music are important to emphasize because they are often overlooked by people. We tend to watch the competition between those marching, but the design teams and staff are in as tough a competition with each other to put those marchers in a position for success. The Cadets had a decent amount of drill ready prior to the start of spring training this season. And give Jeff Sacktig credit... that drill must have been INCREDIBLY difficult to write effectively, and he pulled it off. Lest we forget Jay Bocook's brass arranging for two different groups at the same time, and somehow making it work seamlessly. The entire staff had their work cut out for them just as the members of the corps did, and everything locked in.

So is it November yet? I'm ready for my Crown audition!

...scratch that... I still need to raise a couple thousand dollars...

Fieldtitan Aug '11

Anyone else think that this year really pushed drum corps into the modern era? I still feel like lots of the shows last year were a little traditional. I thought the corps this year really took a risk and entered an unknown realm, and did it very well.

John Davis Aug '11

^ Yeah, definitely so. I loved it! This is going to be the first dvd/cd i get!

KeenanBurton Aug '11

I have to agree. Whether it was from A Brave New World, Rach Star, or XtraordinarY, there was stuff going on on the field this year that has never been seen before and may never be seen again. As far as innovation goes, 2011 was the year.

Justin Ekstrom captainAug '11

I thought that all of the corps were very strong. I usually don't pay much attention to the bottom 6 (inconsiderate, I know), but every show pulled me in.

To shamelessly promote my favorite corps, I thought Phantom connected the most with the audience. Yes, Crown had us all on our feet screaming our heads off, but how much of that was prompted? During Juliet, I felt the crowd really just exploded due to the raw emotion that the members were drowning us in. I bawled like a small infant child at the end with the death sequence. It was done so theatrically!

To be the echo in this thread, I'll add that this year really was something different, and each show could have taken the title, and I would feel it was deserved.

To all who marched this season - well done. The fans appreciate it.

Fieldtitan Aug '11

I think we can all agree that the past few years we all said "oh, thats cool...wow, neat..." But this year it was more like "WOOOAAHHHHH WHO EVER THINKS OF THAT?! INCREDIBLE!"

Frick Nits Aug '11

I wonder when Joe is going to add the "Multiple field uniforms" feature ala Cadets angels and demons.

Craig Juergens Aug '11

I've been wondering that, too. In fact, I may need that for an '06 Southwind sync.

FreakoftheArts73 Aug '11

I was actually wondering when he was going to give us upside down tenors.

acelj9 Aug '11

im wondering if hell give us cubes, or big white tarps!

Sean Smit Aug '11

Just got back from my age-out tour with the 2011 Blue Devils. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who got the chance to see the show. Whether it was through a computer screen or live, I hope you enjoyed the drum corps season.

I can honestly say I'm excited to get back into MML!

LKendrick captainAug '11

^ I freaking enjoyed the crap out of your show. lol

Jason Archer Aug '11

^ No kidding! The blue devils were fantastic! Especially live! I'm also very happy that phantom is getting better and better every year since 09! And congrats to the Cadets and everyone else! I can't think of anyone that wasn't amazing!

Jason Archer Aug '11

And not to mention, how about Spirit of Atlanta?! Geez, fantastic show! I was blown away when I saw it at Denton. It made me ashamed of myself to expect less of them. Congrats to them!
